Canadian Agriculture Minister Confirms Canadian Retaliation if Congress Fails to Repeal Country of Origin Labeling Laws for Beef and Pork

Washington, DC (June 4, 2015)—Yesterday, Canada's Agriculture Minister, Gerry Ritz, gave every indication that Canada will seek steep retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., stating "this is a hammer we're more than willing to swing." Reports indicate that the tariffs could total $9 billion.

It is grave and disheartening that the federal government has risked a serious self-inflicted wound to the American economy over a meat labeling rule that has nothing to do with food safety. Congress must pass corrective legislation before adjourning for its summer vacation in August. Otherwise exports will be punished, farm prices depressed, businesses hurt and jobs lost.
